Introduction To Multiphase Flow

This document introduces modeling of multiphase flows, which are mixtures of phases that can interact and exchange mass, momentum and energy. It describes various multiphase flow regimes including gas-liquid, gas-solid and liquid-solid flows. Approaches for multiphase modeling include the Euler-Euler method that treats phases as interpenetrating continua and the Euler-Lagrange method that tracks individual particles through the fluid flow field.

INTRODUCTION TO MODELING MULTIPHASE FLOWS

INTRODUCTION

A large number of flows encountered in nature and industry are a mixture of phases. A phase can be defined as an identifiable material that has a particular response to and interaction with the flow and the potential field (i.e. velocity) in which it is immersed.

MULTIPHASE FLOW REGIMES

GAS-LIQUID OR LIQUID-LIQUID FLOW Bubbly flow: Dispersed bubbles in a continuous fluid. Droplet flow: Dispersed fluid droplets in a continuous fluid.

Slug flow: Large bubbles in a continuous fluid.

Stratified flow: Immiscible fluids separated by a clearly-defined interface.

GAS-SOLID FLOWS Particle-laden flow: Dispersed solid

particles in a continuous gas phase.

Pneumatic transport: A gas stream is used to make the solid particles flow.

Fluidized beds: consist of a vertical

cylinder containing particles where gas is introduced through a distributor.

LIQUID-SOLID FLOWS Slurry flow: Transport of solid particles in liquids.

Hydrotransport: Densely-distributed solid particles in a continuous liquid.

Sedimentation: A tall column initially

containing a uniform dispersed mixture of solid particles.

APPROACHES FOR MULTIPHASE MODELING

EULER-EULER The different phases are treated mathematically as interpenetrating continua, which can exchange mass, momentum and energy.

Useful in cases where the dispersed phase occupies a volume fraction greater than 0.1 (fluidized beds, bubbly flows). The transport behaviour is described by using the Navier-Stokes equations.

APPROACHES FOR MULTIPHASE MODELING (cont.)

EULER-LAGRANGE The dispersed phase is solved by tracking a large number of particles through the calculated flow field. The dispersed phase can exchange momentum, mass, and energy with the fluid phase.

Useful in cases where the dispersed phase occupies a volume fraction lower than 0.1 (cyclones, dust collectors, spray-dryers). The continuous phase is represented by using the N-S equations, meanwhile a balance of forces is applied to the particles.
