Calculation Parts For Steam Engine Gear System

This document contains calculations related to the gear system of a steam engine. It first calculates the heat applied to the system by multiplying the mass of water vaporized by the latent heat of vaporization. It then calculates the moment of inertia of a sponge and uses it to determine the work done and efficiency of the system. Finally, it calculates the theoretical and measured output speed of a gear to determine the efficiency of the gear/pulley system.

Calculation Parts for Steam engine gear system

1. Heat applied to the system= change of water mass x latent heat of vaporization
= 3g x 2260kJ/kg x 1kg/1000g = 6.780KJ where the latent heat of vaporization is 2260kJ/kg.
2.

Moment of inertia, I = Where m is the mass of sponge, r is the radius of the sponge I = ((0.065kg)(0.04)2)/2 = 5.2 x 10-5kgm2

Average angular velocity = 78.18 rad/s

3. Work done ,W= x I x w2

Where I is the moment of inertia W is the angular velocity W = (0.50 x 5.2 x10-5 x78.182) = 0.1589J 4. Efficiency =work done/Qin = 0.1589/6780J = 2.34 x 10-5 = 0.00234%

Calculation of the output with application 1. Heat supply to the system = change of mass x enthalpy of vaporization = 3g x 2260K J/Kg x 1 Kg/1000g =6780J 2. N1/N2=D2/D1
Where N1 is speed of gear 1, N2 is speed of gear 2, D1 is diameter of gear 1, D2 is the diameter of gear 2

78.18/N2 = 0.08/0.10 N2 = 97.73 rad/s 3. Efficiency of pulley/ gear system N2(measured)/N2 (calculated) = efficiency Efficicency = 38.52/97.73 = 0.39 = 39%
