Faradaic and NonFaradaic

Faradaic process : electron transfer (charge transfer) across electrode/electrolyte interface to create oxidation/reduction and governed by Faradays Law NonFaradaic process : transient current occurs when the structure of electrode/electrolyte interface changes with changing potential or adsorption/desorption process

Faradaic and NonFaradaic

faradaic

nonfaradaic

Ideal Polarized Electrode (IPE)

Electrode at which no charge transfer can occur across the electrode/electrolyte interface, regardless of the external potential applied. No real electrode can behave as IPE over the whole potential range.

Capacitance and Charge of Electrode

Electrical double layer capacitance, Cd

Electrical Double Layer

Electrical Double Layer

When the electrode is polarized, the electroactive species (not specifically absorbed) can only approach to OHP, the potential it experienced is less than the polarized potential (charging current). At low concentration of electroactive species, the charging current may be larger than faradaic current.
