Classification of Organisms

We dont have the faintest idea of the number of things that live on our planet. Estimates range from 5 million to 200 million new species!

Important Vocabulary
Autotroph: Organisms capable of producing its own food from the
sun's energy, or from inorganic chemical material. These organisms perform either photosynthesis or chemosynthesis.

Heterotroph: Organism that cannot produce its own food and must
obtain energy from eating other organisms.

Eukaryote: organism that has an organized nucleus- DNA is found

within a membrane.

Prokaryote: organism that does not have an organized nucleus-DNA

Domains and Kingdoms

Today, a three domain system of classification is commonly used. The three domains are: Archaea Bacteria Eukarya

How are Domains and Kingdoms determined?

Organisms are placed into domains and kingdoms based on their cell type, their ability to make food, and the number of cells in their "bodies."

Kingdom Fungi

Kingdom Animalia

Kingdom Plantae

Kingdom Protista
Domain Eukarya

Domain Bacteria - Kingdom Eubacteria

Domain Archaea - Kingdom Archaebacteria

Kingdom Fungi
* all eukaryotes * all heterotrophs *most multicellular yeast unicellular *most are decomposers

Kingdom Animalia
* all eukaryotes * all multicellular * all heterotrophs *move in order to obtain food * have tissues and organs

Kingdom Plantae
* all eukaryotes *all multicellular * all autotrophs *all contain chlorophyll *have cell walls

Kingdom Protista
*Most unicellular, some like the seaweeds are multicellular *May be autotroph or heterotroph *All are eukaryotes *"Odds and Ends" kingdom

Domain Eukarya
*Mostly multicellular *Eukaryotes *Some are autotrophs, some are heterotrophs *Diversity!

*Unicellular *Prokaryotes *Some are autotrophs, some are heterotrophs

*Unicellular *Prokaryotes *Some are autotrophs, some are heterotrophs *Found in extreme environments on Earth
