Gabriel Chindris 3me - MATERIALS

The document discusses different types of materials used in mechanical engineering. It describes properties that engineers consider when selecting materials, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, and corrosion resistance. The main types of materials are metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Metals are divided into ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. Polymers include thermoplastics like PVC that can be reshaped with heat, and thermosetting polymers that set permanently once molded. Rubbers are also polymers that return to their original shape after deformation.

Gabriel Chindris 3me - MATERIALS

Properties of materials. All materials have a range of properties. The selection criteria for materials to be used in mechanical products are their: Mechanical properties: the commonest property is strenght or the ability of a material to resist forces without breaking or bending permanently. (tensile, compressive, bending, shear, torsional. Elasticity, Plasticity). Thermal properties: describe the behaviour of a material when its temperature changes. Electrical properties (Electrical conductivity, electrical resistivity) Resistance to chemicals (Corrosion, solvent attack)

Main types of materials. The modern designer and engineer need to have a thorough knowledge of materials, their properties and their terminology in order to select and use them properly to do the job required of them. The main types of materials used in mechanical engineering are: Metals polymer materials ceramics composite materials

Metals divided into ferrous and non-ferrous. Sometimes they are used in pure form and sometimes they mixed with other elements. Ferrous metals include iron; iron in pure form is soft, not easily machinable and pasty when molten. Some of the most common non-ferrous alloys are: brass tin-bronze aluminium-bronze cupro-nickel aluminium alloys such as Duralumin

Plastics, rubbers, ceramics and composite materials. Among the wide range of materials used in engineering, we can include different types of plastics and rubber, as well as ceramics and composite materials. The former are made of long chains of molecules know as polymers that may be classified into: Thermoplastics: are used daily as engineering materials, as they can be softened and moulded by heating. Some of the most common are PVC or polyvinyl chloride, tough, easily moulded and widely used to insulate wiring and cables. Thermosetting: differ from thermoplastics in that when they are moulded, a chemical reaction occurs so that the polymer chains can't be broken by reheating.

Rubbers: are also polymers, know as elastomers because they have the property of returning to their original size and shape after deformation. They are used for hoses, drive belts, seals, etc. Rubbers have a many applications where flexibility is of importance.
