A Presentation On Tools of Research

Rating scales are tools used to determine the degree or quality of a behavior or trait. There are two main types: numerical rating scales, which assign numbers to descriptive categories, and graphic rating scales, which use a continuum line. Developing a valid and reliable rating scale involves defining the construct, generating sample items, collecting data, purifying the scale statistically, and evaluating its psychometric properties. Advantages include being time efficient and allowing ratings of many stimuli, while limitations include rater biases like leniency, central tendency, and halo effects.

Meaning of Rating scale

Rating scale: used to determine the degree to which the child exhibits a behavior or the quality of that behavior; each trait is rated on a continuum, the observer decides where the child fits on the scale A rating scale ascertains the degree, intensity or frequency of a variable.

Rating Scales
Make a qualitative judgment about the extent to which a behavior is present Consist of a set of characteristics or qualities to be judged by using a systematic procedure

Numerical and graphic rating scales are used most frequently

Types of Rating scale

Numerical Rating Scales:
a sequence of numbers is assigned to descriptive Categories; the rater marks a number to indicate the degree to which a characteristic is present

Graphic Rating Scales:

a set of categories described at certain points along the line of a continuum; the rater can mark his or her judgment at any location on the line

Types of Rating scale

Standard Rating scale: a set of standards is presented to the rater. The standards are usually objects of some kind to be rated with pre-established scale values. Rating by cumulated points: Forced choice ratings:

Steps in development
Develop the Constraint

Develop a Theoretical Definition

Develop an Operational Definition

Develop a Multi item Scale

Generate a Pool of Scale Items Reduce the Pool of Items Based on Judgment Collect Data Purify the Scale Based on Statistical Analysis Evaluate Scale Reliability and Validity

Apply the Scale and Accumulate

Advantages
Consume less time Very interesting Minimum of training Large number of stimuli Wider range of application Best ratings

Limitations
Given by Guilford (1984) 1. The error of leniency 2. The error of central tendency 3. The halo effect 4. The logical error 5. The contrast error 6. The proximity error
