TMMI37 The Finite Element Method: Welcome To The Course

This document provides an introduction to the course "The Finite Element Method". The Finite Element Method (FEM) is the dominating computational method used in industries for computer-based design. The course aims to present FEM concepts without being too complicated, strengthen skills through lab work, provide a project experience, and teach use of the commercial FE software ANSYS. The agenda for the first lecture is to review course information and preview some lab exercises.

Why study the Finite Element Method (FEM) ?

It is the completely dominating computational method of today, which

is used in all larger companies and industries, and which constitutes the basis of the modern computer based design process We will learn more at the guest lecture by Prof. Larsgunnar Nilsson. A very important lecture to attend, since it hardly is any idea to learn a computational method without knowing how it is used.

The Finite Element Method

Lecture 1; Introduction (modified 2010-01-17)

The course aims at

presenting the material in a not too complicated way (without lowering the requirements)
strengthening your skills in FEM by comprehensive laboratory work providing a concrete project work giving an experience in using a commercial FE-software (ANSYS)
