Before beginning to study for the TOEFL it is a good idea to understand the philosophy and purpose behind this standardized test. Here is an excellent detailed description of the Internet based test.
There are a number of resources available to help you discover exactly what grammar listening and reading skills will be expected on the TOEFL. One of the most thorough of these resources is Testwise.Com
which explains each type of question in terms of the grammar or skill required to answer that type of question successfully.
One of the most important skills to acquire before taking the test is not a language skill. It is TOEFL test taking strategy. To get up to speed on test taking, this guide to taking tests can help you understand general test taking preparation. The TOEFL, like all standardized American tests, has a very particular structure and typical traps for you to fall into. By understanding these traps and structures you can go a long way to improving your score.
The writing section of the TOEFL requires that you write an essay based on a set topic. Testmagic.com has a wonderful selection of sample essays
discussing common mistakes and giving examples of essays with various scores to show you the range expected on the essay.
Now that you have a good idea of what the test is, what is to be expected, AND what strategies are needed you can begin to practice taking various sections of the test. Some of the best FREE online practice you can get is at the FreeTOEFL.com . This site claims to be entirely for free, but requires you to become a member.
Finally probably the biggest piece of advice you will hear from everybody is: "Take the test as often as possible". To help you do just that (for FREE) follow the following links to these practice tests and exercises:
Man: I'm feeling kind of sick tonight. I don't know if I have a virus,or if it's something I ate for lunch. Maybe we should stay home tonight. Woman: I think you're right. I feel a little under the weather myself. Narrator: What does the woman mean? (A) She believes the weather is too bad to go out. (B) She is not feeling well herself. (C) She didn't eat lunch. (D) She disagrees with the man. "I feel under the weather" means that "the woman is not feeling well"; the answer is B.

How many kinds of TOEFL Tests are there? Please note that the following information changes almost weekly. We suggest that you visit "toefl.org" for the most recent information.
There are currently 3 kinds of TOEFL tests being used around the world: The IBT: the Internet Based TOEFL Test (IBT) is currently being used in the following territories and countries:
Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belgium, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Cameroon, Canada, Central African Republic, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cote D'Ivoire, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Finland, France, Gambia, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Guam, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Korea, Kuwait, Krygyzstan, Laos, Latvia, Lebanon, Lithuania, Macau, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mali, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Moldova, Monaco, Mongolia, Morocco, Mozambique, Netherlands Antilles, Netherlands, Nepal, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Norway, Oman, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Reunion, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, St. Kitts, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, UAE, United Kingdom, United States, Vietnam, U.S. Virgin Islands, Yemen, Zimbabwe. The ETS PBT: the Paper and Pencil TOEFL. This test is administered by ETS. It is given six times per year (the testing schedule for 2007-8 is : August 18, 2007; October 13, 2007; November 10, 2007; January 12, 2008; March 7, 2008; May 10 2008. It is offered at specific locations (you should note that all centers are not open on each of the above dates). See the offical TOEFL website for locations. The Institutional PBT: also called the Institutional TOEFL. This test is administered by English language institutions around the world. However, universities and colleges normally do not accept this test for admission unless it is used in a local context (in other words, if the English language institution is located in close proximity to a university or college, then the university or college might accept it for admission). There are no plans to phase out this test. Which kind of TOEFL Test do I need to take? The student must ask the educational institution which type of TOEFL Test it accepts. Different universities accept different TOEFL tests. For example, the University of California, Davis accepts the IBT, ETS PBT, Institutional IBT (from its own English language institution, and even the CBT (even though this test has been almost entirely phased out). Which TOEFL Test is the easiest: the IBT, the ETS PBT, or the Institutional PBT? ETS has tried very hard to make the tests equally difficult. Most students feel that the IBT is more difficult because it contains more difficult reading and listening tasks--and it contains a Speaking Section. Some students feel that the Institutional PBT is easier because it does not always contain a writing section--and it contains a grammar section. Different students will have different reactions to the different tests. How should I study for the TOEFL Test?
You should combine an "in-class" approach with an "out of class" approach. In other words, you should study a TOEFL preparation material such as Beat the TOEFL: Mastering the IBT DVD intensely--and you should practice speaking with native speakers and reading native English materials as much as possible!

Doing well on English examinations - or any examination for that matter - depends not only on your knowledge, but also on having a good strategy. Time Required: 20 minutes
Here's How:
1.
Do not insist on completing each question before going to the next. By insisting on completing each question, you loose time and become nervous.
If possible, go through the entire test answering the questions you are sure you know. Go through the test a second time working out the answers to more difficult questions. Once you have gone through the test twice, see if any of the questions asked can help you answer any really difficult questions. If you have a strong feeling about a question when you first answer it, don't go back and change it later. Play the odds: If you don't know the answer, write something. In a 4 choice multiple choice question you have a 25% chance of being right. Do not cheat! Taking a test is as much for you as it is for your teacher. If you cheat, you won't help yourself in the long run. Do not translate from your mother tongue! Don't block when listening. Limit yourself to what you know. Look for time signifiers when having to conjugate. Throw out the ridiculous answers in a multiple choice question. Don't try to be too funny or clever.
Tips:
1.
If you don't know an answer, don't worry about it. Worrying about what you don't know keeps you from showing what you do know.
2. 3.
Remember that tests not only given to test your ability, but also to help you learn what you need to focus on to improve your English. If you don't understand why you have made a mistake, make sure to ask the teacher about that mistake in a latter session. Being embarrassed about mistakes will never help you improve, so ask!
