Science Methods Lesson Plan #1 Grade: 1 Time: 45 mins Date: 13FEB2013 Materials: KWL Chart Pumpkin seed (non-germinated)

Pumpkin seed (germinated) A Seed is Sleepy; Dianna Hutts Aston Seed Sort Objectives: 1. Students will become familiar with the life-cycle of a plant as well as relevant vocabulary. Seed, germinate, sprout, leaves, stem etc. 2. Students will construct observation logs and have a general understanding of how to use them Opening Motivation: For the next few weeks we are going to be working with you on a science project. Do you know what a person who works in science is called? A scientist. So, if a person who does science is a scientist, and we are going to be working on a science project for the next few weeks, what does that make us? Scientists! That is right! We are all now, officially, scientists. We arent going to be any ole scientists though; we are going to be plant scientists. There is a word for plant scientists, Ill tell you what it is, but its an awfully big word, okay? So whatever you do, dont try to say it. (Say in a silly voice so the students will defy the request) A scientist who works with plants is called a botanist. (hopefully they will repeat the word back to you) So we are not only scientists, we are botanist. Now, Just like any good scientist, before we start an experiment, we need to talk about what it is that we know, and we have to figure out what we want to know. Activity 1: KWL Chart This activity will be done with the entire class. It will occur on the rug where Ms. Yang normally does direct instruction. We will write the students responses on a large poster board sheet. After the activity the board will be posted near the center. What do you know about plants? What do you want to know? Follow up questions:

How do you know that? Why do you think that is? Activity 2: Read-a-loud A Seed is Sleepy by Dianna Hutts Aston. The read-a-loud will occur on the carpeted area of the classroom, where Ms. Yang does much of her direct instruction and read-a-louds. While reading through this story pause at vocabulary words and talk to the students about what they mean. After we discuss the word, we will write it down on a large sheet of paper and accompany it with a drawing. This sheet will be added to throughout the lessons and will be posted on the wall near the center. Vocab: Seed Roots Cones Seed Coat Germinate Soil Activity 3: Seed sort This is an introduction to a center activity that will remain in the classroom for them to explore throughout the week. Talk with the students about seeds and how they grow into larger plants. Show the students the pumpkin seed and germinated pumpkin seed for them to examine. The book mentions the fruit of a plant protecting its seeds, make the connection between the seeds in the book bearing fruit and the seeds they need to sort. All of the examples in the seed sort are such fruits. Hold up the Seed Sort worksheet and demonstrate how you want them to fill it out. Split the class into 4 groups, hand out the seed sort work sheets. Give each table 3 sets of seeds, names and pictures for them to sort out together. Pull out 4 examples from the seed sort and mix them up in a pile. Ask the students if they can sort out which seed picture and name go together. Because each student will only have seen 1/4th of the seeds available for the sort, the entire activity will remain available for the week at the center. Seeds that will be available to sort at the center are Pumpkin Okra Corn Sunflower Broccoli Snap Pea Lettuce Onion Tomato

Watermelon Sweet Pepper Carrot
