City Boy The Hatchet was written by Gary Paulsen. Gary Paulsen won three Newberry Honors for Hatchet. This story was about a 13 year old boy who lived with his divorced mother in New York. The boy's name was Brian Robeson. In the summer, Brian was supposed to visit his father who worked in the Canadian oil fields. Brians story shows that he is a true toughie. In the beginning of the story, when Brian woke up after the crash, he became aware what happened to him. He was alone in the Canadian wilderness. As he looked himself over he couldnt believe that he had been in the crash. It hit Brian that he was extremely thirsty. Brian didnt know where to find water other than the lake. The thirst led Brian to decide that he had to drink the lake water. One sip from the clear part of the lake would be enough. This got out of control and Brian ended up taking huge gulps of the water. Unclean lake water made Brian throw up. After a while, the water sharpened Brians hunger, and he couldnt see any food around. Because of the new problems, Brian faced life or death situations. During the middle of the book, at midnight, Brian was awakened be some sort of slithering noise. He became so nervous he instinctively threw the hatchet at the creature. The animal was a porcupine and it whacked Brian in the lower leg giving Brian eight quills. After the porcupine left, Brian had no choice but to pull the quills out. It caused much pain to Brian and it hurt for him to walk. Brian realized that there are more than just birds and squirrels out in the wilderness. Near the end of the story, Brian became tired of only eating fish and berries. He considered trying to catch a wild bird. Brian spent many hours irritatingly trying to hunt a bird.

Through hard thinking, Brian discovered that he had to try to catch a bird based on its shape, not its color. With new hope, Brian caught his first bird. The bird was cooked and Brian ate the bird. New hope told Brian that he could survive. In conclusion, Brians story shows that he is a true toughie. Finding drinking water, escaping the porcupine, and hunting a bird for the first time showed that Brian was very adaptable. But perhaps more than his body was the change in his mind, or in the way he was was becoming.
