7 READING Read the text and answer the questions that follow.
What does your handwriting say about you?
Have a good look at your partners handwriting. Is it the same as yours? Is it smaller, or perhaps more slanted? Why
would this be important? The fact is that for many years, people have believed that its possible to describe a persons
character by looking at his handwriting. All you need is about 20 lines of writing on a page that hasnt got lines on it.
From this, they say, its possible to tell if a person is sensible, hard-working, shy or sociable. This is called
graphology. Today, many companies use graphology as an important part of the job interview process.
What exactly do graphologists look for? One of the most important things for them is the size of a persons writing.
The normal size of a letter is about 3 mm. Smaller writing means that you are an intelligent person but perhaps also
quite shy, and you may not have much self-confidence. A person who has got large writing is usually outgoing,
independent and friendly, although he may tend to be a little arrogant.
The direction of the lines is also significant in the eyes of a graphologist. If a persons writing tends to go in an upward
direction, this could indicate that the writer is optimistic and ambitious but may also tend to lose his temper quite
easily. Writing which goes in a downward direction hints that a person is pessimistic and over-sensitive.
Finally, signatures can tell us a lot about a person. A legible signature means that a person is honest and reliable. An
illegible signature could mean that the writer has got something to hide.
While all this may sound very interesting, graphology is not an accepted science. Many people are sceptical about its
effectiveness and feel it is unreasonable to lose a possible job because of where you put the dot above the letter i.
