should be able to use the fraction and brackets functions on a calculator. Most students should be able to use the fraction, root, power and brackets functions on a calculator. Some students should be able to use any combination of the fraction, root, power and brackets functions on a calculator. Key words: Power, Root, Brackets, Shift, Mode, Calculate. Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students are given the opportunity to use the calculator as freely as possible in order to familiarise themselves with the different combination of calculations. Encourage students to enter calculations where they can only press the equals button once, this should help them realise the need for brackets. Students present solutions on mini-whiteboards. Development Allow the class time to find the function buttons shown on their specific calculators. Once found, work through with the students the order in which to enter the calculations, emphasising the need for brackets. Consistent use of vocabulary will ensure students will more likely press the buttons in the correct order. Work though questions on the second slide with the students then present the problems on the third for the students to work through independently. Have students check their answers by estimating the solutions and rounding to the nearest significant figure before they calculate. Plenary The three calculations represent the three different success criteria. Have the students work independently at first then check their solutions together through estimating. The class could present their working and solutions on mini-whiteboards at the end. Differentiation More able: Students could look at using the fixed function on the calculator to give answers to a specific accuracy. Students could try to solve each problem in one go without breaking the calculation down into smaller steps. Less Able Students may need to break the calculations down into various stages. Emphasise the need to keep intermediary answers as accurate as possible and to round the final solution. Resources: Calculators Mini-Whiteboards
