EL-214 Digital Logic Design (3rd Semester) : Lab Experiment No.1

This document is a lab experiment description for an introductory digital logic design course. The objectives are to learn about basic logic gates - NOT, AND, and OR - and their truth tables. Equipment used includes logic gates installed on a digital trainer board, jumper cables, and a logic tutor. The discussion defines each gate - NOT inverts the input, AND outputs high only if all inputs are high, OR outputs high if any input is high. The procedure is to apply power, verify gate operations by inputting 0s and 1s and observing the LED output, and develop and verify truth tables for 4-input AND and OR gates. Pin configurations and observation tables are also included.

Introduction to Basic Logic Gates (AND, OR, NOT)

PEFORMANCE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this experiment, the student will be able to know The basic logic gates and their operation Implement and verify the truth table of basic logic gates EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: Digital trainer with adapter Jumper cables NOT gate IC (7404 ) installed on trainer board AND gate IC (7408 2-input) installed on trainer board OR gate IC (7432 2-input) installed on trainer board Logic tutor LT 345 MK2

DISCUSSION: NOT gate: NOT gate is a logic gate which inverts the input. It logic function is represented as F = A it is also called Inverter. AND gate: AND gate is composed of two or more inputs. It only produces high output when all the inputs are high, when any of the input is low it produces low. Its logic function is represented as F = ( A.B ) OR gate: OR gate is composed of two or more inputs. It only produces high output when any of the input is high, when all inputs are low it produces low. Its logic function is represented as F = ( A + B )

PRELIMINARY PROCEDURE: Apply Vcc +5V to pins of digital trainer board. Verify its NOT, AND & OR operation by applying 0 and 1 on input of concern IC and connect the output of each gate to a LED Fill the following table
