Real Diploma & Engineering Classes

The document is an exam for a diploma engineering class on applied mechanics. It contains 16 questions testing knowledge of concepts like Lami's theorem, the law of parallelogram, the triangle of forces, scalar and vector quantities, kinetics and kinematics, and calculating the resultant of force systems. Other questions define and ask to calculate values for mechanical devices like velocity ratio, mechanical advantage, efficiency, and applying the law of machines to determine effort required for loads. The final questions ask to distinguish between centroid and center of gravity, and state principles of superposition and transmissibility.

Diploma Engg. Semester-II Subject Name: APPLIED MECHANICS Date: 28/03/2013 Instructions
1. Attempt all questions. 2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary. 3. Figures to the right indicate full marks. 4. English version is Authentic. 1. 2. 3. 4. ANSWERS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. State the Lamis theorem. State the law of parallelogram. State and explain Law of Triangle of forces. Differentiate between (1) Scalar and Vector quantities (2) kinetics and kinematics 5. Two tensile forces of 100kN and 80kN are acting at a point with an angle of 1200 between them. Find magnitude and direction of the resultant force. 6. Find magnitude and direction of the resultant force of the force system as shown in fig.1. 7. Solve Using lamis theorem in fig 2 8. Define (1) Velocity ratio (2) Mechanical advantage (3) Input of a machine (4) Output of a machine (5)Efficiency (6)Reversible machine (7) Self locking machine 9. For a simple lifting machine, Law of machine is P = 0.1W + 3.5. If VR=30.5, find maximum efficiency and maximum mechanical advantage of machine. State whether the machine is reversible or not. Find effort required to lift a load of 50 kN. 10. Find magnitude of two forces such that if they act at right angle, their resultant is 90 N and when they act at 60o, their resultant is 117 N. 11. Distinguish between centroid and centre of gravity. 12. Find centroid of lamina as shown in figure-3 13. Explain law of machine. 14. In a single purchase crab, the length of handle is 600 mm and diameter of load drum is 200 mm. The no. of teeth on pinion is 20 and no. of teeth on spur wheel is 100. If the efficiency of machine is 40%, find the effort required to lift a laod of 600 N. 15. For a certain lifting machine, law of machine is P = 0.05 W+3. Find effort required to lift a load of 500 N.
