Method Description Advantages Disadvantages Example: Cornell Note-Taking System

The document describes four note-taking methods: the Cornell note-taking system, visual mapping, shorthand, and annotation. The Cornell system uses a two-column format to organize notes and study sheets. Visual mapping presents information graphically to help students make connections. Shorthand uses symbols to keep up with fast lectures but requires practice. Annotation adds notes directly to materials to connect existing knowledge and organize notes, but supporting materials are not always available.

Method Cornell Note-taking System

Description
A two-column format focuses not only on recording lecture notes, but also organizing and reviewing those notes.

Advantages
Helps to keep notes organized. Creates efficient study sheets.

Disadvantages
Requires the student to closely follow the lecture. Daily review of notes is essential.

Example

Visual Mapping

A visual mindmapping technique presents information in a graphic format.

Helps visuallyoriented students organize information. Assists students in making connections.

Not all information is easily represented in a graphic format. Post-class time needed to organize notes.

Shorthand

A freeform method that allows students to develop their own system of words and symbols.

Allows students to keep up with fast-moving lectures.

Requires practice to ensure understanding after class.

Annotation

Instead of using a blank sheet of paper, note-takers annotate preexisting materials such as PowerPoint slides, textbook notes, and data tables.

Allows students to make connections to existing knowledge. Helps to organize notes.

PowerPoint slides, etc. are not always available and some professors do not announce the topic of lectures beforehand.
