What Is A Radiator?: Heat Exchangers Heat Energy Automobiles Buildings

Radiators are heat exchangers that transfer heat energy between mediums, and are commonly used for heating and cooling in automobiles and buildings. They consist of connected pipes, often with fins, through which fluids like steam, water or coolants circulate to radiate or absorb heat. Radiators are also used in electronic devices to dissipate waste heat through tiny heat sinks that convey heat from components into an air stream through conduction and convection.

What is a Radiator?

Radiators are heat exchangers used to transfer heat energy from one medium to another for the purpose of cooling and heating. The majority of radiators are constructed to function in automobiles, buildings etc.

In practice, the term "radiator" refers to any of a number of devices in which a liquid circulates through exposed pipes (often with fins or other means of increasing surface area) Radiators can used for heating and cooling purpose. A heating device consisting of a series of connected pipes, typically inside an upright metal structure, through which steam or hot water is circulated so as to radiate heat into the surrounding space.

A cooling device, as in automotive engines, through which water or other fluids circulate as a coolant is also called radiator and is shown below.

Following is the figure which shows the main components of Radiator used for cooling in engine.

Use in Electronic devices:

As electronic devices become smaller, the problem of dispersing waste heat becomes more difficult. Tiny radiators known as heat sinks are used to convey heat from the electronic components into a cooling air stream. Heat is transferred to the air by conduction and convection; a relatively small proportion of heat is transferred by radiation owing to the low temperature of semiconductor devices compared to their surroundings.
