Objective: To perform the load test on a given Petrol Engine and plot the following
Performance curves. 1. Total fuel consumption v/s BP 2. Specific fuel consumption (sfc) V/s BP 3. Brake mean effective pressure Pbm V/s BP 4. Brake thermal efficiency bh V/s BP 5. Indicated mean effective pressure (Pim ) V/s BP 6. Indicated thermal efficiency ( ith) V/s BP 7. Mechanical efficiency (m) V/s BP
Theory:
Brake power (BP), Indicated power (IP), Frictional power (FP) Etc.
Apparatus used:
Engine test rig with loading system, stop watch
Formula used:
a. IP= BP+ FP
b.
gen = efficiency of the generator = 90%, V = Voltage (Volt), I = Current (Ampere)
c.
= density of fuel 0.85 gm/cc, Calorific value of fuel = 45 MJ/Kg t = time in sec for 10cc fuel consumption
d. BP = Pbm*L*A*n*K, IP = Pim*L*A*n*K L = Stroke; A = Area of piston, n = working stroke per sec., K= No. of cylinders Pbm = Break Mean effective pressure, Pim = Indicative mean effective pressure e. Power Specific fuel consumption, PSFC = TFC/BP

Procedure: 1. Before starting the engine check the fuel supply, lubrication oil and availability of cooling water. 2. Set the dynamometer at zero loads. 3. Run the engine till it attains the working temperature and steady state condition. 3, Adjust the dynamometer load to obtain the desired engine speed. Note down the fuel consumption rate. 4. Change the dynamometer load, and fuel consumption arte will increase. 5. Note down the fule consumption rate, speed, air inlet tempr. 6 Repeat 3, 4 7. Do the necessary calculation. Results and discussion Precaution: Check fuel supply, lubricating oil, start the engine on no load.
