Test in Physics 1

This document contains instructions for a 1-hour engineering physics test with 3 sections. Section I contains 4 short answer questions worth 2 marks each about concepts like Newton's rings, spatial coherence, interference patterns, and conditions for dark and bright fringes. Section II contains 2 out of 3 short answer questions worth 6 marks each about interference vs. diffraction, and reflection from a soap film. Section III contains 2 long answer questions worth 15 marks each about deriving expressions for path differences and analyzing interference patterns from thin films, air wedges, and Young's double slit experiment.

Short answer questions: Max: 50marks

4 x 2 = 8 marks
1. How does the diameter of a dark ring in Newtons rings changes if the plano convex and glass plate are kept in a liquid of refractive index ? Explain. 2. Define spatial coherence. Where can you see this type of coherence? 3. Where can you see interference by division of wave front and division of amplitude? 4. Give the mathematical conditions for dark and bright fringes in Youngs double slit experiment.

II.

Answer any two from the following: 2 x 6 = 12 marks

5. Differentiate between interference and diffraction( 3 points) 6. White light falls normally on a film of soapy water whose thickness is 5 x 10-5 cm and = 1.33. Which wavelength in the visible region will be reflected most strongly? 7. Why Fresnels half period zone is called so? Show that all half period zones in Fresnels zone have the same area.

III.

Answer the following: 2 x 15 = 30 marks

8. Give the diagram showing path difference between the two transmitted rays from the lower surface of a thin transparent sheet of material. Hence derive the expression for path difference. OR Explain interference in an air wedge. Derive an expression for the distance between dark lines in an air wedge. How can you use this to determine the flatness of a surface? 9. Show that in Youngs double slit experiment the fringes are of equal wid th. What was the importance of Youngs double slit experiment? Draw intensity - path difference curve. OR How can you determine the thickness of a thin sheet of transparent material? What happens if white light is replaced with monochromatic light?
