I am Sam
I am Sam is an extraordinary fathers story. It is about mental disability, parenting and an extraordinary love. Sam stands as a single father of an abandoned child. The childs mother runs away immediately after giving birth, leaving the baby to Sams hands. Sams mental capacity is of a seven year old but in the film he shows a sense of responsibility, compassion and determination of a matured adult. Whenever stressed, Sams comfort zone is listening to the songs of the Beatles. Sam named the baby Lucy Diamond Dawson. He got her name from the Beatles song Lucy is a sky with Diamonds. He is able to raise Lucy with the help of his four friends who are also mentally disable and his neighbour Annie, a pianist was the one who takes care of Lucy whenever Sam cant or while hes on his job at Starbucks. Annie functions as Lucys baby sitter. The film also shows how language development occurs in every child. Lucys first word was Annie. The movie is dramatically heavy. Its hard to imagine how a developmentally disable father fights for a custody of his 7 year old daughter and at the same time doesnt have a well compensated job to pay for a lawyer. He has the strong determination and perseverance of a matured adult. Sam got the lawyers service for free and develop a good friendship with Rita .Sam was a solution for Rita, he pulled her back from the brink of a metal breakdown. What really does define a good parent or a healthy parent? Sam helps Rita w/ her problems and helps her realized how much her son really means to her. Sam also convinces her to leave her husband, because Rita told him that he cheated on her. I am Sam is themed, Love is all you need. It answers the question. What does it takes to be a father? Not an education or degree, not a high level of I.Q. but the love of a father, His I.Q. did not have any effect on the love he was able to give.

What is the indication that Sam really was a viable, capable parent? It is when Sam did not visit Lucy and missed his schedule visits at Randys house was an indication that he is, a capable parent would feel that pain exclusion.
