Genre Approach

The document discusses the genre-based approach to teaching writing. It describes the genre-based approach as having three stages: modeling, joint negotiation of text, and independent construction. The approach focuses on social purpose, the reader's viewpoint, and imitation of models. It promotes negotiation between teachers and students and involves reading, research, and disseminating information. However, it may not prepare students for unpredictable real-world communication and cannot cover every genre within classroom time constraints.

Genre Based Approach To Teaching Writing

STAGES OF GENREBASED APPROACH :
Modeling = focuses on the educational &social construction of the genre Joint of negotiation of text by learners and teacher = learners carry out exercises which manipulate relevant language forms The independent construction of texts by learners = learners produce actual texts through activities such as choosing a topic, researching, and writing

CHARACTERISTICS OF GENRE-BASED APPROACH

The knowledge of language is intimately attached to a social purpose Focus more on the viewpoint of the reader than on that of the writer Learning takes place through imitation and exploration of different kinds of models Focuses on the text structure and language Promotes a negotiating process between teacher and students Involves reading, research and disseminating Text for genre is dependent on the activities

DISADVANTAGES OF GENRE APPROACHES

Students had difficulty communicating effectively in the relatively unpredictable world beyond the classroom Does not help the students to teach every genre in the limited classroom time available
