Spelling Letter To Parents

The third grade students will now take spelling tests differently to help improve spelling application in writing. Students will receive pre-tests and be assigned spelling lists as before. On Fridays, students will be tested on some words from their list by writing out sentences dictated by the teacher. The sentences will include spelling words and be read aloud only three times for listening practice. Students will be evaluated not only on spelling the words correctly but also on handwriting, capitalization, punctuation, and writing the full sentences verbatim. This aims to better assess spelling skills within a writing context.

Dear Parents and Students,

From this point on, the third grade students will be given spelling tests differently. We are trying to make the test more
applicable and beneficial to the students and their writing.

We have noticed that many of the spelling words in their writing

weeks later are still spelled incorrectly. We are hoping these changes to the test will help with spelling application.
Students will receive spelling pretests the same as previous weeks. Students will be given orange, blue or green lists
depending on the pretest score. Students will be asked to practice all 15 words in their spelling list during the week. On Fridays,
they will be tested on only some of the words from their list. To incorporate writing skills into the weekly spelling tests, the
teacher will read five sentences aloud which will include one or more spelling words from their list. Students will write the
sentence verbatim. See attached. The sentences will only be read 3 times each, listening will be important. Students will be
tested not only on their spelling list of words, but also high frequency words practiced in kindergarten through third grades. (i.e.
they, very, friend, because, favorite, were, where, our)
