Technical Writing Notes #2

Engineering and mathematics students are often required to write documents such as abstracts, executive summaries, lab reports, design reports, and proposals. The document outlines the typical sections included in these documents, such as an abstract providing the purpose, key findings, and significance of a project. An executive summary is a one-page overview of a proposal that describes the problem, essential program details, expenses, and qualifications. Lab reports document experiments through sections on the title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, conclusion, and references. Design reports summarize a design, introduce the problem and objectives, discuss the design and testing, and conclude with perspectives for future use. Proposals include an executive summary, introduction, project description, timeline, budget

○ Design problem, the objectives of the design, the
assumptions for the design, the design alternatives, and
the selection of the design being reported
○ Also included of the transition is mapping of the entire
report.
• Discussion
○ Presents the design itself, the theory behind the design,
the problems encountered (or anticipated) in producing the
design, how those problems were (or could be) overcome,
and the results of any tests of the design
○ This part usual consists of two, three, or four main
headings.
• Conclusion
○ Summarize design and testing work
○ If fails, note why
