Printmaking

A picture of myself was taken and edited to get different contrast and shadows. Then, I placed tracing paper on top of my picture and trace while trying to transform the face into shapes and lines. When happy with the drawing, I use a black marker to go over it once again. After that, I used a cardboard knife to cutout the positive spaces of the picture.

Printmaking Reflection
1. First, I had a picture of myself taken; it was then edited to get different contrast and shadows. 2. Then, I placed tracing paper on top of my picture and trace while trying to transform the face into shapes and lines. 3. When happy with the drawing, I use a black marker to go over it once again. 4. After, I had to re-draw it in my sketchbook without tracing and then scan the picture in to the computer. 5. The picture was projected on the whiteboard; therefore I placed a cardboard paper on top and traced the picture using a black marker. 6. After that, I used a cardboard knife to cutout the positive spaces of the picture. 7. The stencil is completed and its time to make some prints. 8. I got a plain big card sheet and placed it on plastic surface with stencil on top of it. 9. Finally, I used different spray can colors to spray into the stencil; I create different patterns with a diversity of colors.

Explain your process

Are you pleased with your print? Why or why not? I am pleased with some of my prints because it turn out well and the contrast of different colors looks great but for some prints it looks too similar with the rest. If I were to do it again, I would have look for more inspirations on the Internet. The patterns I chose seems to be repeated and common unlike for one of my classmate which was she decided to shift her stencil every time she sprayed a bold color, the stencil kept on shifting like a fan shape. What are the strengths of your print? What are some areas you would like to improve on? The strengths of my prints I would have to say the diversity of colors I mix because since in the end there werent enough resources of spray paint I had to think of a

way to use the spray paint efficiently. Another strength is some of the patterns that I used, like for example one of my print Ive decided to flip it so it would turn out another dimension of the face. The areas I would like to improve on is to use bold colors because it stands out more than the others that I chose such as grey, yellow, pink and orange. If would also look better if I were to create different backgrounds for each print instead of the plain white background. Did you have any challenges and how did you overcome them? The challenges that I had I would have to say is creativity because I want my prints to be different so that it would be unique. I overcame this challenge by looking at others for inspiration and play with the colors. Another big challenge is in the one of the first steps, which is drawing the portrait itself. It is hard because I want it to look exactly like me but sadly it didnt turn out right but at least it looks like a human portrait, therefore Im quiet pleased. I overcame this challenge by taking my time on the drawing, drawing it bits by bits at a time using grid method. Why do you think artist choose to use printmaking (rather than just a drawing)? I think that artist choose to use printmaking rather than just drawing because prints are very much different unlike painting and drawings because it exist in multiple examples. When printmaking, artists are able to create a variety of limited edition prints using the same stencil that make. They can use different colors and styles and reuse the stencil over and over again; this gives the artist creativity and originality.
