Electronic Warfare: Navdeep Singh Rathore

This document summarizes a seminar presentation on electronic warfare given by Navdeep Singh Rathore for their bachelor's degree. It defines electronic warfare as any action involving the use of the electromagnetic spectrum or directed energy to control the spectrum or attack the enemy. The main components of electronic warfare are using electromagnetic energy or anti-radiation weapons to destroy enemy equipment, and protecting friendly equipment from enemy electromagnetic effects. It also discusses the need for electronic warfare due to increased reliance on radar, communications, and fast missile systems. Common electronic warfare techniques presented are generating multiple false targets, noise jamming to impair enemy electronic devices, and frequency jamming.

What is Electronic Warfare?

Electronic warfare (EW) refers to any action involving the use of the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) or directed energy (DE) to control the ELECTRO MAGNETIC SPECTRUM or to attack the enemy. EW can be applied from air, sea, land, and space by manned and unmanned systems.

Need Of Electronic Warfare

Increased reliance on radar. Increased use of Communications. Increased speed of missiles and weapons systems requires high-speed detection and tracking. Active-homing or passive-homing long-range missiles give little warning.

THE MAIN COMPONENTS OF EW

Use of EM energy, or anti radiation weapons for destroying enemy

Actions taken to protect equipment from any effects of enemy use of EM spectrum that destroy combat capability. Actions tasked for intercept, identify, & locate unintentional radiated EM energy.

Since radar and infrared (IR) weapons systems present the greatest threat to air operations on today's battlefield, this text emphasizes radar and IR theory and countermeasures.

NOISE JAMMING
Definition: Noise jamming is the deliberate radiation, reradiation, or reflection of electromagnetic energy with the purpose of impairing the use of electronic devices, equipment, or systems being used by the enemy.
