    Most mammals give birth to live young that grow inside the mother's body until birth, while reptiles, birds, and fish lay eggs externally. Reptiles can either lay eggs or give live birth without eggs. Birds lay 1 to 17 hard-shelled eggs at a time. Fish lay enormous numbers, sometimes millions, of tiny eggs into water.
