Hypermedia Lesson Plan
Introduction: This lesson will introduce the students to the concept of Genocide. It will help them to understand what genocide is and to examine some examples of genocides that have taken place in the past. Content Area/Grade Level: 10th grade current events class. Objectives: Students will be able to formulate a definition of genocide in their own words. Students will be able to briefly explain three different examples of genocide in recent history. Standards Addressed: New Mexico State Social Studies Standards 9-12 benchmark 1-C #8 New Mexico State Social Studies Standards 9-12 benchmark 1-C #9 Relative Advantage: Using video in this lesson helps to engage students in the events of the past. The storytelling ability of videos can be much more effective than other methods, especially in todays world of constant media bombardment. These videos draw students in and help them to visualize the context of the stories that they are learning about. Timeline: This lesson should be able to be accomplished in approximately two 45-minute class periods. Materials: Enough iPads or other Internet enabled devices to have one for every three students Links to web resources located on class blog Handouts with questions related to hypermedia texts and videos Grouping Strategies: Students will be randomly grouped into trios in order to be able to effectively discuss the topics that they view and answer questions about. Learning Activities: Students will begin by reading and paraphrasing the five most important points that they find in the United Nations International Declaration of Human Rights.
Students will then be put into groups of threes and given an iPad to watch three different videos regarding genocides around the world. Students will have handouts with both comprehension and discussion questions to answer as a group in between the viewing of each video.
Assessment: After viewing and discussing three videos, students will be given an assessment where they will be asked do define genocide in their own words. They will also be asked to describe three different genocides that have occurred in the last 75 years. Modifications: Students with ELL difficulties will be allowed to speak their responses to the assessment questions either during class or at some other point following the class period.
