F.M. 80 P.M. 40 Time: 3hr

Evaluate: ii , ij ij , ij ik jk for is kronecker delta and range = 3. [10] Also find 4 3 8 2 . 2 9 [10]

Evaluate the invariants I1, I2 and I3 for the given stress tensor. 7 principal values and the stress invariants of the principal stress tensor. 4 3

2. a) A uniform shaft ABCD of torsional rigidity 100 KN m2 is fixed at ends A and D; and have equal span of 4 m each . The shaft is having torsional load at nodes B and C as 30 KNm clockwise and 50 KNm anticlockwise respectively. Analyze it using DSA. [10] b) A collinear unidirectional spring system is shown in the figure below. All springs have stiffness 200 KN/mm. Only the external loads of 800 KN and 500 KN act on the nodes 2 and 4 respectively. Analyze it. [10]

3.

a) A two member plane truss is loaded as shown in figure. Member CB is 1.3 m long and has cross sectional area 10 cm2; and that of 1.8 m long member BA is 12 cm2. Both the members are made of mild steel. Support A sinks down by 5 mm and support C settles towards left by 5 mm. Analyze using step by step procedure for direct stiffness approach (hand calculations) and compute reactions. [20]

50 KN 60 KN B

4. a) A Cantilever beam AB 4 m long has elastic translational spring support with stiffness 5 KN/cm at the end B and fixed support at A. In span AB there is uniform load of intensity 50 KN/m. The material is mild steel and section is 75 x 150 mm rectangular for both spans. Find the spring force. [10] b) Describe how boundary conditions are considered using Wilson Method with suitable example as any one of the problems in this question you did. [10] 5. a) Write down the Half Band Form of the stiffness matrix for the truss shown below with specified DOF numbering. Find absolute maximum difference between the code numbers for DOF associated with each element. Show that the half band width is Maximum of the absolute maximum difference between the code number for DOF associated with each element + 1. [10]

b)

For the frame shown above, provide the structure to be analyzed with consideration for symmetry and reducing as many DOF as possible. [10]
