Networking I Lesson 52: Student Objectives: After Completing This Lesson, Students Will Be Able To

This networking lesson explains that using unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable for connections between buildings can cause electric shocks, as the grounding wires in different locations may have different potentials and UTP completes the circuit. It recommends using fiber optic cable instead of UTP for backbones and between floors of multi-level buildings to avoid conducting electricity and provide insulation from potential grounding differences or lightning strikes. The lesson evaluates fiber optic as the safer option for long cable runs where grounding could vary.

Networking I Lesson 52

Student Objectives: After completing this lesson, students will be able to: explain how UTP being used on a network can cause a shock assess the benefits of using fiber optic to connect buildings as opposed to UTP evaluate what other wiring locations should use fiber optic and why Lesson Summary: if grounding wires indifferent locations have a different potential and they are connected, shocks can occur when UTP cable connects computers in different locations - it completes the circuit (anyone who touches the chassis on a computer could get a shock) one hand rule - only use 1 hand to touch things if IEEE standards have been followed and everything works correctly - no shocking should occur if you touch a computer case with 1 hand and the Ethernet connector wit the other you will s get a big shock EIA/TIA allows fiber for backbone because it contains glass - which is an insulator - not a conductor fiber is also recommended between floors on multi-level buildings because power transformers on different floors can have different earth grounding if UTP is used for backbone it can conduct electricity (copper wire) and can provide a pathway for lightning strikes
