Networking I Lesson 51

This lesson explains how alternating current (AC) power lines can cause noise and problems for computer networks. It discusses how computers are grounded to dissipate static electricity and prevent damage. A good ground connection helps reduce errors caused when AC signals interfere with computer logic gates. The lesson emphasizes that properly grounding computer motherboards and circuits to the chassis and safety ground wire helps dissipate static discharge and prevent damage to semiconductors or data.

Networking I Lesson 51

Student Objectives: After completing this lesson, students will be able to: explain how AC lines cause noise and creates problems explain how computers are grounded and why Terms: AC - alternating current - electric current that reverses its direction regularly and continually (used in buildings) ground - electrically neutral contact point DC - direct current - current that travels in only one directions (used in flashlights) - flows at a constant value when circuits are turned on conductors - any material with a low resistance to electrical current any material capable of carrying electrical current insulators - any material with high resistance to electrical current Lesson Summary: AC power is all around us and unless properly addressed can cause a lot of problems for a network errors are created by burying the desired signals and preventing the computers logic gates from detecting the leading and trailing edges of the square signal waves - a poor ground connect can make this worse static electricity is the most damaging because it is uncontrollable and unpredictable static discharge can damage semiconductors and data in a seemingly random fashion - they shoot through the computer like bullets - good grounding helps prevent this in computers the motherboards and computing circuits are electrically connected to the chassis , therefore to the safety grounding wire, this dissipates static electricity, this prevents the metal parts from getting energized with a hazardous voltage - due to wiring fault
