What is Narrative poetry?

Narrative poetry tells a story, usually a far-fetched one, or a story that has been
passed down through generations and is an oral tradition. The defining requirement
for "narrative verse" was that it should tell a story, just as a prose story does, if
possible with a beginning, middle, and end, and a recognizable plot.

Traditional ballad.
Humans are story-telling creatures. Long before the written word gave permanence
to our utterances, humans would tell stories to those who would listen. People
gathered in the firelight to listen to the spell words wove as they were told of old
stories, heroes, battles, romances. Children crept noiselessly among the listening
adults, only half understanding the jokes but remembering the tales of courage,
grief, love, and adventure in faraway places, doomed sea-voyages and terrifying
ghosts. People joined in as it came to certain familiar, often-repeated phrases
(which the teller used to give himself a breathing space and to recall which part of
the story came next.)The oldest inhabitant might repeat legends his grandfather
had passed on to him, while the children, all ears, stored these away to hand on to
their offspring years in the future. So it continued until one day someone scribbled
the words down on a bit of parchment, and storytelling became more permanent as
it gradually shifted to the written word.

Nine things to remember about narrative poetry…

1. Narrative poetry has been used by humans even longer than the written word.

2. There are emotional advantages to telling a story in verse.

3. There are constraints because of the limitations of the verse form, such as
length, rhythm and rhyme.

4. A great deal must be compressed in a poem which can be expressed more fully
in prose.

5. A narrative poem often begins in mid-action, whereas a fiction account can

begin at the very beginning and supply innumerable details.

6. Many narrative poems contain some kind of moral lesson or social or political
viewpoint.

7. The poetic forms have changed over time and become more free.

8. Poems in traditional verse forms are melodious and rhythmical, while blank verse
and free verse offer a kind of freedom of expression which may be more suitable
to the theme.

9. Traditional narrative verse forms are a popular medium for dramatic and
humorous subjects
