HowandWhentoUseTrueCryptRescueDisk(AfterEncrypting) I.HowtoBootTrueCryptRescueDisk TobootaTrueCryptRescueDisk,insertitintoyourCD/DVDdriveandrestartyour computer.IftheTrueCryptRescueDiskscreendoesnotappear(orifyoudonotsee the'RepairOptions'iteminthe'KeyboardControls'sectionofthescreen),itis possiblethatyourBIOSisconfiguredtoattempttobootfromharddrivesbefore CD/DVDdrives.Ifthatisthecase,restartyourcomputer,pressF2orDelete(as soonasyouseeaBIOSstartupscreen),andwaituntilaBIOSconfigurationscreen appears.IfnoBIOSconfigurationscreenappears,restart(reset)thecomputer againandstartpressingF2orDeleterepeatedlyassoonasyourestart(reset)the computer.WhenaBIOSconfigurationscreenappears,configureyourBIOStoboot fromtheCD/DVDdrivefirst(forinformationonhowtodoso,pleaserefertothe documentationforyourBIOS/motherboardorcontactyourcomputervendor'stechnical supportteamforassistance).Thenrestartyourcomputer.TheTrueCryptRescueDisk screenshouldappearnow.Note:IntheTrueCryptRescueDiskscreen,youcanselect 'RepairOptions'bypressingF8onyourkeyboard.

TheTrueCryptRescueDiskallowsyoutorestoreitandthustoregainaccessto yourencryptedsystemanddata(however,notethatyouwillstillhavetoenterthe correctpasswordthen).IntheRescueDiskscreen,select'RepairOptions'> 'RestoreTrueCryptBootLoader'.Thenpress'Y'toconfirmtheaction,removethe RescueDiskfromyourCD/DVDdriveandrestartyourcomputer. 2)IfyourepeatedlyenterthecorrectpasswordbutTrueCryptsaysthatthe passwordisincorrect,themasterkeyorothercriticaldatamaybedamaged.The TrueCryptRescueDiskallowsyoutorestorethemandthustoregainaccesstoyour encryptedsystemanddata(however,notethatyouwillstillhavetoenterthe correctpasswordthen).IntheRescueDiskscreen,select'RepairOptions'> 'Restorekeydata'.Thenenteryourpassword,press'Y'toconfirmtheaction, removetheRescueDiskfromyourCD/DVDdrive,andrestartyourcomputer. 3)IftheTrueCryptBootLoaderisdamaged,youcanavoidrunningitbybooting directlyfromtheTrueCryptRescueDisk.InsertyourRescueDiskintoyourCD/DVD driveandthenenteryourpasswordintheRescueDiskscreen. 4)IfWindowsisdamagedandcannotstart,theTrueCryptRescueDiskallowsyouto Page1

TrueCryptRescueDiskHelp permanentlydecryptthepartition/drivebeforeWindowsstarts.IntheRescueDisk screen,select'RepairOptions'>'Permanentlydecryptsystempartition/drive'. Enterthecorrectpasswordandwaituntildecryptioniscomplete.Thenyoucane.g. bootyourMSWindowssetupCD/DVDtorepairyourWindowsinstallation. Note:Alternatively,ifWindowsisdamaged(cannotstart)andyouneedtorepairit (oraccessfilesonit),youcanavoiddecryptingthesystempartition/driveby followingthesesteps:Ifyouhavemultipleoperatingsystemsinstalledonyour computer,boottheonethatdoesnotrequireprebootauthentication.Ifyoudonot havemultipleoperatingsystemsinstalledonyourcomputer,youcanbootaWinPEor BartPECD/DVDoryoucanconnectyoursystemdriveasasecondaryorexternaldrive toanothercomputerandthenboottheoperatingsysteminstalledonthecomputer. Afteryoubootasystem,runTrueCrypt,click'SelectDevice',selecttheaffected systempartition,click'OK',select'System'>'MountWithoutPreBoot Authentication',enteryourprebootauthenticationpasswordandclick'OK'.The partitionwillbemountedasaregularTrueCryptvolume(datawillbeonthefly decrypted/encryptedinRAMonaccess,asusual).

NotethatevenifyouloseyourTrueCryptRescueDiskandanattackerfindsit,he orshewillNOTbeabletodecryptthesystempartitionordrivewithoutthe correctpassword.
