Assignment 1 Heat Transfer

A cylindrical resistor dissipates 1.2 W of power and is 2 cm long and 0.4 cm in diameter. It transfers heat uniformly from all surfaces. The document asks to determine the amount of heat dissipated in 24 hours, the heat flux, and the fraction of heat from the top and bottom surfaces.

A cylindrical resistor element on a circuit board dissipates 1.2 W of power. The resistor is 2 cm long, and has a diameter of 0.4 cm. Assuming heat to be transferred uniformly from all surfaces, determine (a) the amount of heat this resistor dissipates during a 24-hour period, (b) the heat flux, and (c) the fraction of heat dissipated from the top and bottom surfaces.

In a power plant, pipes transporting superheated vapor are very common. Superheated vapor is flowing at a rate of 0.3 kg/s inside a pipe with 5 cm in diameter and 10 m in length. The pipe is located in a power plant at 20oC, and has a uniform pipe surface temperature of 100oC. If the temperature drop between the inlet and exit of the pipe is 30oC, and the specific heat of the vapor is 2190 J/kgK, determine the heat transfer coefficient as a result of convection between the pipe surface and the surrounding.

Consider a person standing in a room maintained at 20oC at all times. The inner surfaces of the walls, floors, and ceiling of the house are observed to be at an average temperature of 12 oC in winter and 23oC in summer. Determine the rates of radiation heat transfer between this person and the surrounding surfaces in both summer and winter if the exposed surface areas, emissivity and the average outer surface temperature of the person are 1.6 m2, 0.95 and 32oC, respectively.

Consider a flat-plate solar collector placed horizontally on the flat roof of a house. The collector is 1.5 m wide and 4.5 m long, and the average temperature of the exposed surface of the collector is 38oC. The emissivity of the exposed surface of the collector is 0.9. Determine the rate of heat loss from the collector by convection and radiation during a calm day when the ambient air temperature is 20oC and the effective sky temperature for radiation exchange is 10oC. Take the convection heat transfer coefficient on the exposed surface to be 15 W/m2oC.
