ItwasduringhomeroominNovemberwhenwebroodedaboutwhichturningpointinhistory wasworthyenoughforourNHDproject.WequicklydiscoveredourcommoninterestintheCivil RightsMovement,buthaddifficultychoosinganeffectiveturningpoint.Atfirst,weselectedMartin LutherKingJr.smemorableIHaveaDreamspeech,butwerewarnedthatthespeechwastoo specific.Sowetookastepbackandchoseabroadertopic:TheMarchonWashingtonforJobsand Freedom. WebeganourresearchinJanuary,followingtheendofDecembervacation.Themajorityofour researchtranspiredduringschoolhours,whenweutilizedthedatabasesprovidedbytheschools MediaCenter,aswellasthewidelyusedsearchengineGoogle,toconductresearchonthemarch.The GaleVirtualReferenceLibraryandtheSalemHistorydatabaseswereextremelyvaluableinourpursuit ofthesourcesneededtoconstructourwebsite.Googlesinvaluablefunctionasasearchengine programmedtoscourtheinternetforinformationgreatlyaidedourefforts,directingustonumerous websiteswithinformationonourtopic.Throughoutthetimespentcomposingthewebsite,theresearch wasconductedcontinuously,sothatadditionalinformationcouldbelocatedasnecessary. Forthepresentationofourproject,weelectedtocreateawebsite,aswewereintriguedbythe opportunitytomanipulatemoderntechnologyinconveyingourtopic.AfterobtainingaWeeblyaccount throughtheNHDwebsite,webegantheconstructionofourproject.Weorganizedthewebsiteintothe eventsleadinguptothemarch,themarchitself,anditseffects.Theinformationthatwehadamassed wasseparatedintothethreesections.Inaddition,moreresearchwasconductedtoaccommodateour needforprimarysources,suchasquotes,photos,andvideos.Forexample,insteadofwritinganentire introductoryparagraphonthehomepage,weuploadedanintroductoryvideoinstead.

TheMarchonWashingtonforJobsandFreedomwasnotonlyaturningpointintheCivilRights Movement,butinthehistoryofmankindsviewsonrace.BeforethemarchandtheCivilRights Movementingeneral,segregationwasprevalentthroughoutthenationandAfricanAmericanswerestill waitingforthechangethathadnotbeenfullyrealizedwiththesigningoftheEmancipationProclamation. However,themarchaccomplisheditsmissionofgainingattentionfortheplightofAfricanAmerican activistswhoworkedtowardstheendofracialdiscrimination.Theattentionturnedintosympathy, whichturnedintothesupportneededtocreatechange.TheeffortsofwhiteandAfricanAmericans workingtogetherresultedintheenactmentoftwolandmarkbills,theCivilRightsActof1964andthe VotingRightsActof1965,whichweremonumentalachievementsfortheCivilRightsMovement.As the50thanniversaryofthemarchdrawsnearer,peopleofallracescanreflectonthemarchasthe reasonforthevastlyimprovedracialequalitythatwehavetheprivilegetoexperiencetoday.
