Trenton & Princeton

Trenton and Princeton took place during late 1776 and early 1777. Trenton and Princeton was not the best time for the Continental Army, not many people were enlisting for the army and that made them not condent. When George Washington and his army took over Trenton New Jersey, that made the colonists more condent that they would win which inspired them to join the Continental Army. I think that the Continental Armys biggest problem was the Hessians, They were German soldiers who were hired by the british to help them win the war against America.

Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga took place during October 1777, the Patriots won the war, part of it was because General Howe did not get his orders in time which caused the Continental Army to ght one army instead of two. After Britain lost the battle against the Continental Army, the Americans kept the redcoats and Hessians as POWs (Prisoners of war). General Burgoyne sent a message to General Clinton for reinforcements, but the message did not get sent in time so he had to surrender General Gates.

Winter at Valley Forge

England had New York and Philadelphia Their only food was fire cake which was made of water and flower because the food was scarce Valley Forge was in the middle of Philadelphia (captured by England) and the HQ of the Continental Army which I think made it a big battle because they were near each teams home base 2500 of Washingtons men died from exposure, malnutrition, and disease; I think that made General George sad and mad because he lost a bunch of his troops Dr. Albigence said I am sick, discontented and out of humor. Poor food, hard lodging-cold weather-vomit half my time-I cant endure it-why are we sent here to starve and freeze? Valley Forge was a camp in Philadelphia not a city Some of the soldiers fighting for Washington went as far as desertion to get away from Valley Forge because it was so bad, but most of Washingtons men were loyal to him and did not leave Valley Forge Sir Henry Clinton and Gen. Charles Cornwallis were the two most important British generals during the Revolutionary War; but, Clinton and Cornwallis did not agree on strategies Valley Forge took place during 1777 Washington cared so much for his troops that he did what they had to do, suffer instead of living the life like he could have done; that is why Washingtons troops did not leave him and were loyal It was a severe winter and that messed up their camp a lot It was between British HQ, new Continental Army HQ, and the Continental Congress HQ, it made both armies step up their defense

Yorktown

It took place on September 28th 1781 It decided the outcome of the Revolutionary War Cornwallis retreated to Yorktown to build fortifications for its defense and waited for reinforcements to come George Washington was confident that he was going to win and he fought hard for the Continental Army The French brought supplies, weapons, and troops to help the allied forces The American and French forces combined was 16000 men, the British defenders numbered at 7500 The British were strong and tough, but they were highly outnumbered which gave them a disadvantage over the continental army Cornwallis surrendered after an attempt to escape Yorktown but he got caught and surrendered which made his army POWs OHara surrendered himself to get Cornwallis out of the POW camp After Gen. Benjamin Lincoln had accepted his side of the surrender, Lord North new it was over and had to tell Britain that they needed to make a peace treaty on acceptable terms

The Treaty of Paris

Congress sent John Jay, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin to Paris to negotiate a peace treaty The treaty would have to recognize American independence The trio had to talk with King Louis XVI and his ministers about the terms because the French helped a lot on the American side of the war The French were not looking for Americas main interests though, they wanted to team up with the continental army and stay allies with them because they knew that if they started war with them, it would be good bye to them. There were 3 parts of the agreement, it recognized the US as its own country, all the redcoats would be sent back to England, and it recognized that the land was belonged to the US.
