MECH 332 Report Outline For Experiments Group Report (50% of Grade)

This document outlines the sections and content required for a group report and individual report on an experiment for a MECH 332 class. The group report must include: a title page with group details; a tabulation of observed data and any supplemental information; a tabulation of calculated results from analyzing the observed data; sample calculations showing the methods used; and graphs of the data with labeled axes and units. The individual report must include: an introduction stating the experiment's purpose; a procedure section noting any deviations; a discussion comparing results to theory and commenting on questions; conclusions supported by results; potential sources of error; and comments on the lab. Both reports are worth 50% of the overall grade.

MECH 332 Report Outline for Experiments Group Report (50% of Grade)

Sections
I. Title Page
A single sheet containing the title of the experiment, date, instructor's name, group identity and members' names and responsibilities (see sample title page).

II. Observed Data

A tabulation of the data recorded during the experiment and any supplemental information such as averages or physical properties required for the data's analysis.

III. Calculated Results

A tabulation of results determined by analysis of observed data.

IV. Sample Calculations

Logically organized examples of the methods used to obtain the Calculated Results. Copies of computer programs (such as Matlab) are not suitable substitutes.

V. Graphs
Data plots clearly identified by figure numbers and titles. Complete axis labels with units indicated on each axis. Proper landscape orientation in report.

Individual Report (50% of Grade)

Heading:
Name, Group, Experiment, MECH 332 I. Introduction ( 20% of individual report) Brief statement of lab purpose and description of experiment (three to five sentences). This should make clear the overall purpose of what was done in the experiment. (Show the grader that you understood the experiment) Do not just copy the Lab handout. II. Procedure ( 6% of individual report) Note any deviations from the handout procedure; otherwise state explicitly that the handout procedure was followed. III. Discussion and Questions ( 50% of individual report) Compare results with theory as appropriate. Comment on agreement, range of data, etc; also, discuss any items or questions listed under the individual report in the Lab handout. IV. Conclusions ( 10% of individual report) Make the strongest statements your results will support; conclusions do not have to be "earth shaking" to be included, but they must be supported by your results. Your conclusions may be a repeat/summary of the some of your discussion statements. V. Potential Sources of Error ( 10% of individual report) This is not a formal error analysis; if required, a formal error analysis is done in the Group Report. You should be able to give 4 to 5 specific potential error sources: non-equilibrium conditions, accuracy of manometers, gage offset, etc. VI. Comments on Lab ( 4% of individual report) Constructive comments on the lab: things you liked; things you didnt like.
