Tutorial Chapter 5 Static

The document provides instructions for solving problems involving determining forces in truss members and frames using methods of joints, sections, and reactions. It contains 10 problems asking the reader to determine forces in various truss and frame members, and identify if each member is in tension or compression. The problems involve trusses used for balconies, airplane wings, and Howe trusses, as well as frames, beams, and a hoist.

Tutorial (Chapter 5) Part 1: Method of Joints

1. The truss, used to support a balcony, is subjected to the loading shown. Approximate each joint as a pin and determine the force in each member. State whether the members are in tension or compression. Set P1 = 4 kN, P2 = 0,

2. Determine the force in each member of the truss, and state if the members are in tension or compression. Set P = 4 kN.

3. Determine the force in each member of the truss, and state if the members are in tension or compression. Set P = 12.5 kN.

Part 2: Method of Sections

4. The internal drag truss for the wing of a light airplane is subjected to the forces shown. Determine the force in members BC, BH, and HC, and state if the members are in tension or compression.

5. Determine the force in members JK, CJ, and CD of the truss, and state if the members are in tension or compression.

6. Determine the force in members KJ, KC, and BC of the Howe truss, and state if the members are in tension or compression.

Part 3: Frames and Machines

7. If the peg at B is smooth, determine the components of reaction at the pin A and fixed support C.

8. Determine the horizontal and vertical components of reaction at pins A and C.

9. The compound beam is fixed at A and supported by rockers at B and C. There are hinges (pins) at D and E. Determine the components of reaction at the supports.

10. The hoist supports the 125-kg engine. Determine the force the load creates in member DB and in member FB, which contains the hydraulic cylinder H.
