9D12104 Shallow Foundations

The document appears to be exam questions from a geotechnical engineering course. It contains 8 questions related to shallow foundations, soil sampling, bearing capacity, settlement, raft foundations, and soil-structure interaction analysis. The questions cover topics like planning a soil exploration program, types of soil samples, suitable foundation types for different soil conditions, combined footings, rectangular and trapezoidal footing design, bearing capacity calculations, allowable soil pressures, settlement estimation methods, raft foundation types, and superstructure-foundation interaction analysis.

Code: 9D12104 M.Tech - I Semester Regular and Supplementary Examinations, April/May 2012 SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS (Geotechnical Engineering) Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 60 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** 1 (a) (b) Explain briefly how do you plan an exploration programme for a housing colony. How would you decide the depth of exploration and the lateral extent of the investigation? Discuss various types of soil samplers for obtaining undisturbed samples. What do you understand by disturbed and undisturbed samples? What are the sources of sample disturbance? Suggest suitable choice of foundation with reasons for the following sub-soil conditions extending to greater depth. (i) Dense sand (ii) Stiff clay (iii) Soft clay (iv) Loose sand. Under what circumstances a combined footing is provided? Describe the procedure for the design of rectangular and trapezoidal footing. Discuss the effect of shape on the bearing capacity. Differentiate between safe bearing capacity and allowable soil pressure. A strip footing is to carry a load of 800 kN/m. The depth of the footing is 1.25 m. The soil properties are: c=10 kN/m2, = 300 and kN/m3. For a factor of safety of 3 against shear failure, determine the size of the footing. If the footing were to be a square one and to carry a load of 800 kN, all other factors remaining same, what size would you recommend? For 300, N c = 46, N q =33, N =37. What are the types of settlements? Discuss the values of total and differential allowable settlements of buildings. Discuss the various methods of estimating the settlement of footings embedded in different soils of finite thickness. How to estimate the settlement of a footing resting on cohesion less soils based on SPT values and cone penetration tests? How to proportion the footings for equal settlements? What are the types of raft foundations? Explain them in detail under what circumstances each one should be used. How to select the allowable soil pressures for rafts in cohesive and cohesion less soils? Discuss. Explain any one method of analysis for considering super structure-foundation soil interaction in detail. *****
