The course Biology of Cancer 15-BIO-656 will provide an overall survey of the biological basis of cancer. Over 10 weeks, the course will explore what constitutes cancerous growths, the causes and induction of cancer, cancer types, natural defense systems against cancer, and the physiology and molecular basis of cancer. Specific topics covered include the biological nature of cancer cells, how cancers spread, chemical and radiation carcinogenesis, infectious agents and cancer, genetic instability and cancer, oncogenes and suppressor genes, the immune response to cancer, and biologically-based cancer treatments. The final grade will be based on scores from 3 equally-weighted exams during the quarter.
