Syllabus: Term Project Report

This syllabus is for the course EE538 Neural Networks, a 3 credit elective course offered in the spring term. The course will cover brain-inspired artificial neural networks for data clustering, classification, and prediction based on biological information processing. It will introduce network architectures like Hebbian learning and feedforward networks, as well as unsupervised and supervised learning rules. Recurrent neural networks for time-series prediction and adaptive control will also be discussed. The textbook is Neural Networks and Learning Machines by Haykin and topics will include perceptrons, multi-layer perceptrons, support vector machines, and dynamically driven recurrent networks.

Descriptions of Courses

This course deals with brain-inspired artificial neural networks for the data clustering/mining, classification, and prediction based on the brain information processing mechanism. After comparing several network architectures, we will introduce Hebbian learning rule as the basis of biological adaptive learning. Then, we will move to the artificial neural network models with the neuron model, feedforward architecture, and learnig rules. Both unsupervised and supervised learning rules are presented for the data clustering and pattern recognition, respectively. Artificial neural networks with recurrent architectures will also be discussed for time-series prediction and adaptive controls. Textbook: S. Haykin, Neural Networks and Learning Machines (3rd Edition), Prentice Hall, 2008.
