Number Sequences: Introduction The Magic Number Sequence

The document introduces number sequences and their patterns. It defines a number sequence as a set of numbers arranged in a definite order according to some definite rule. Examples of patterns in sequences include arithmetic sequences where a constant value is added to each term, and geometric sequences where each term is multiplied by a constant value. Square number sequences are also mentioned, where each term is the square of the preceding whole number.

INTRODUCTION THE MAGIC NUMBER SEQUENCE

Number Sequences
In the number sequence 2,4,6,8,10, and so on there is obvious pattern.Sequences can be expressed in terms ot the nth term ot the sequence. The nth term=2n.To find the first term we put n=1 into the formula,,to find the 4th term, replace the n by 4s:4th term=2x4=8 A set of numbers arranged in a definite order according to some definite rule is called a sequence. Or A sequence is a function whose domain is the set N of natural numbers. It is customary to denote a sequence by a letter a and the image a(n) or t(n),n IN under a by an or tn Examples:

1,3,5,7........(adding 2 to every term) 1,4,16,64.....(multiplyinh by 4 every term) 20,17,14......(add -3 to every term) The different numbers in a sequence are called terms of sequence.

Numbers can have interesting patterns. This is some of the number pattern

i)Arithmetic sequence just adding some value each time

Example: 1,4,7,10,13,16,19,22,25, and so on

This sequence has diference of 3 between each time.

ii)Geometric sequence just multiply by some value each time Examples: 2,4,8,16,32,64,128,256,...... This sequence has a factor of 2 between each other iii)Square numbers

1,4,16,25,36,49,64,.... First number is made by squaring Second number is 2 squared
