Wickes Brace Seals Droitwich 2nd Half Comeback

Evesham Vets entertained Droitwich Vets, on a Dickensian foggy frozen pitch, with only the floodlights cheering up the night as Droitwich beat Evesham 3-2 in the third game in quick succession. Droitwich started the first half with verve and pace as chances were created and spurned at will, whilst Evesham early on tried to knock balls up to the front men to get the Droit defence on the back foot to no avail. But, Evesham grew into the first half and chances from short corners were being created, one such short corner yielded a shot from the top of the D which cracked the right hand up right with the keeper and post men beaten all ends up. Shortly after, Pete Best was denied a goal by an excellent clearance by a defender a yard off the line, but hang on its by one of his own team mates Phil masquerading as a defender! Later in the half as the fog thickened Evesham picked the defensive pockets of Droit with a close range finish after several parries by the keeper. Evesham second arrived from a penalty corner routine which fooled the keeper at his near post leaving the half time score 2-0. At half time there was much joviality, and the keeper Marv, uttered the fine words we only need to score three to win this if we dont concede any. So out Droitwich strode for the start of the second half. The half began brightly as Droitwich exerted their authority on the game with crisp passes on this frozen pitch, with Wickes, Best spurning glorious opportunities as well as penalty corners. Droitwich first goal arrived from Luke Wickes neat finish from a penalty corner. Pete Best and Sir Paul Woodward begin to exert their skill in the middle of the park as Droitwich began to force errant passes from Evesham. Droit second goal came after a break down the left saw the ball crossed in and James Bishops finished majestically in the top corner after pouncing on a loose ball in the D. Droitwich final goal to seal the comeback was scored by Wickes at the far stick. A stirring second half of Hockey, after those immortal words were uttered, by the young keeper at half time!
