Ec3 Handout

The document provides an introduction to EN 1990, which covers the basis of structural design and is used with other Eurocodes. It gives safety factors needed for ultimate limit state (ULS) and serviceability limit state (SLS) verifications, including partial factors from Table 1 and combination factors from Table 2. It also discusses checks for ULS, combinations of actions, and equations 6.10, 6.10a, and 6.10b for checking loading combinations using the factors.

ULS Checks
EQU: static equilibrium STR: strength/buckling etc GEO: Failure of excessive deformation of ground FAT: fatigue failure

Combinations of Actions
Can use either: Equation 6.10 Less favourable of 6.10a and 6.10b

Method: Get the factors from Tables 1 and 2 and substitute them into the equation you are using, check for a range of different loading combinations and take the least favourable result.
