TCP/IP Reference Model

The TCP/IP reference model is the network model used in present internet architecture. It was developed as a research network sponsored by the US Department of Defense with major goals of connecting multiple networks, maintaining connections as long as source and destination machines functioned, and having a flexible architecture. The model got its name from its two main protocols, TCP for connection-oriented transmission and IP for the internet protocol, and includes application, transport, internet, and host to network layers.
