Periosteal Reaction

Periosteal Reaction refers to new bone formation in response to injury or other stimulation near the periosteum. The document describes and shows images of different subtypes of periosteal reactions that can be non-aggressive or aggressive, including thin, solid, thick irregular, septated, laminated (onionskin), perpendicular/hair-on-end, sunburst, and disorganized reactions. Examples are given of solid periosteal reaction seen with osteoid osteoma and onionskin reaction seen with osteomyelitis.

PERIOSTEAL REACTION Periosteal Reaction adalah pembentukan tulang baru dalam menanggapi injury atau rangsangan lain di sekitar

periosteum.

Gambar. Various subtypes of nonaggressive and aggressive periosteal reaction. AI, Diagrams show thin (A), solid (B), thick irregular (C), septated (D), laminated (onionskin) (E), perpendicular/ hair-on-end (F), sunburst (G), disorganized (H), and Codman triangle (I) periosteal reactions.

GambarSolid periosteal reaction (osteoid osteoma).

A, Lateral radiograph reveals thick, smooth periosteal reaction in anterior cortex of distal femur (arrow). B, Axial CT image shows lucent central nidus (arrow) of osteoid osteoma and thick reactive periosteal reaction (arrowhead).

GambarOnionskin periosteal reaction (osteomyelitis). Frontal radiograph shows localized laminated periosteal reaction (arrow) along lateral cortex of distal femur.

GambarHair-on-end periosteal reaction (Ewings sarcoma). Lateral radiograph of lower leg shows bony spicules emanating perpendicular to cortex (arrows).

GambarHair-on-end periosteal reaction (chronic osteomyelitis). Axial CT image of shoulder shows spiculations (arrows) arising along posterior cortex of scapula.
