Image Processing - An Overview: Manish T I

Image processing involves improving images for human viewing or feature measurement without adding new data, only rearranging or removing some information. A digital image consists of a grid of pixels with locations and values. Images can be manipulated in the spatial or frequency domains. Gaussian blurring reduces noise and detail by applying a Gaussian function to convolve the image, where the Gaussian function in two dimensions is the product of Gaussians in each dimension. Research areas applying image processing include medical imaging, GIS, industry, biometrics, weather prediction, and security.

Image Processing An Overview

Manish T I

Why ?
Improving the visual appearance of images to a human observer, including their printing and transmission Preparing images for the measurement of the features and structures which they reveal.

Dos & Donts

Image processing, like food processing or word processing does not reduce the amount of data present but simply rearranges it The general guideline to be considered is that it is never acceptable to add anything to an image, but it may be acceptable to suppress or remove some information if it makes the remaining details more accessible, either visually for presentation and communication or to facilitate measurement.

A digital image is composed of a finite number of elements, each of which has a particular location & value. Elements are picture elements, image elements, pels, pixels. Spatial Domain Direct manipulation of pixels. Frequency Domain Transforms & Inverse transforms on the pixels.

Gaussian blur / Gaussian smoothing

It is a widely used to reduce image noise and reduce detail. Applying a Gaussian blur to an image is the same as convolving the image with a Gaussian function The Gaussian blur is a type of image-blurring filter that uses a Gaussian function for calculating the transformation to apply to each pixel in the image. The equation of a Gaussian function in one dimension is

In two dimensions, it is the product of two such Gaussians, one in each dimension:
