Reflective Lesson Plan Model - Laws of Exponents
Claflin University School of Education - - - EDUC 323 Reflective Lesson Plan Model Name: Steven Walker PART I: PLANNING Laws of Exponents Title of Lesson
Is this lesson original idea? If not, from what source did I borrow this lesson?
Date: 10/23/12
MathisFun.com Source Mathematics Subject Area (s) 8th Grade Level 8.EE.1. Know and apply the properties of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical Curriculum Standard(s) expressions.
What will students experience during the lesson? What is the agenda for the lesson? What is the content to be taught?
Students will learn the rules of exponents. Also students will be able to add, subtract, multiple, and divide exponential equations.
What will I need to teach this lesson? What do students need to participate?
Materials
Students: paper and pencil
What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson? Write measurable objective(s).
Lesson Objectives
Students will be able to apply the laws of exponents and solve exponential equations dealing with squares and cubic roots.
How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material? How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept? How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English?
Students who do not understand the material will received my guided instruction, while the students who have mastered the assignment will continue doing independent practice doing their worksheets. And the students are still learning English will receive assistant instruction after school or whatever assistance their ESL program gives them.
Pre-assessment
Ask students what they know about exponents, square roots, cubic roots, and exponential equations.
What will I do to make a connection between students and this lesson?
Motivation(Hook)
Ill ask students why they believe it is important to follow laws, such as follow street lights and stop signs. Then discuss why the laws of exponents are important and relate them to rules that the students follow such as classroom and school rules and rules they follow every day.
What will I say to explain the importance of learning this lesson?
Statement of Purpose
Just like the rules and laws we follow each day it is important to follow the rules and laws of exponents.
What will I do to show students what is expected?
Through guided practice I will show the students how to apply the laws of exponents to solve exponential equations.
What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task?
Guided Practice
Through guided instruction I will show how the students should use certain and sometimes multiple laws of exponents to solve exponential equations.
What will I ask to know if students understand so far? List questions. What will I do throughout the lesson to determine if students understand the information? List activities/techniques or describe the strategies that you plan to use.
I will ask students to come up to the board to answer different exponential equations using the rules of exponents that we went over during my instruction. Also student will be working cooperatively to solve the equations.
What will students do to internalize the knowledge?
Independent Practice
Students will be given problems to do independently for homework and then put on the board the next day.
What will students do to demonstrate what they learned during the lesson? If an assessment is used, attach a copy. If using an authentic assessment, attach a copy of the scoring rubric.
Assessment
Students will work in groups of three to solve one equation and put on the board in class and they will have to explain what law/s of exponents they used and what steps they took to solve the equation.
How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences?
Closure
Remember the importance of rules and laws because they will be here for the rest of our lives.
What can students do at home or in the classroom to apply the knowledge or skills? What will you do to connect the lesson with the home, community and community agencies?
Extension Activities
When using the laws of exponents you have to know which law/s to use. Just like which street light lets you know when to go, slow down and stop.
How is technology meaningful to this lesson? How do you plan to use implement student used technology during the lesson?
Technology
N/A
What activities do you plan to implement to connect your lesson across the curriculum to all 7 content areas?
N/A
Reflections
I feel as though I rushed through the lesson and not given the students the opportunity to ask questions and make sure that they had a well enough knowledge to be able to do well on their homework assignment. And also I confused myself and the students when explaining one of the laws of exponents and I need to always make sure I have a clear understanding of the subject.
