Each of the questions below consists of a set of labelled sentences. These sentences,
when properly sequenced, form a coherent paragraph. Choose the most logical
order of sentences from among the options.
9. A. This makes the individual chromosomes visible, and they form the classic four arm
structure, a pair of sister chromatids attached to each other at the centromere.
B. Chromosomes cease to function as accessible genetic material (transcription stops) and
become a compact transportable form.
C. The shorter arms are called p arms and the longer arms are called q arms.
D. In the early stages of mitosis or meiosis, the chromatin strands become more and more
condensed.
E. This is the only natural context in which individual chromosomes are visible with an
optical microscope.
(1) BACED
(2) DBACE
(3) BACDE
(4) DEACB
(5) CADBE
10. A. This increased capacity per unit area can be used to decrease cost and/or increase
functionality.
B. But, since the speed and power consumption gains are apparent to the end user, there
is fierce competition among the manufacturers to use finer geometries.
C. In general, as the feature size shrinks, almost everything, including functionality
improves - the cost per unit and the switching power consumption go down, and the
speed goes up.
D. ICs have consistently migrated to smaller feature sizes over the years, allowing more
circuitry to be packed on each chip.
E. ICs with nanometer-scale devices are not without their problems, principal among
which is leakage current.
(1) EBCDA
(2) DEACB
(3) EDBAC
(4) DACEB
(5) CDABE
Detailed solution: In the first read, it would seem that there is a link between B and C.
However, that is not the case. One of the more prominent links is between D and A and
starts off with 'this increased capacity' in A. This is picked up from D which talks about
increase in capacity. Also E, which talks about the disadvantage which cannot come at the
beginning of the paragraph. This eliminates options 1, 2 and 3. Now, between options 4
and 5, option 4 is a better option because B should come after C in the sequence as it
talks about the idea introduced in C. Hence, the correct answer is option 4.
11. A. There are exceptions: In Senegal, for example, nearly 47 percent of marriages are
multiple.
B. To take on more than one wife often requires considerable resources.
C. Even within societies which allow polygyny, the actual practice of polygyny occurs
relatively rarely.
D. Such appears the case in many traditional Islamic societies, and in Imperial China.
E. This may put polygamy beyond the means of the vast majority of people within those
societies.
1. BDAEC
2. CABED
3. BDECA
4. BACDE
5. CEDAB
Detailed solution: Statement A says that in Senegal, a large percentage of marriages are
multiple. For this statement to be an exception it should follow right after statement C
which says that polygyny is rare. Therefore, the CA link is established.
This narrows down our choices to options 2 and 3. In option 3, however, there is no BE
link which is also quite prominent. The ‘this' mentioned in statement E is referring to the
fact that polygyny requires considerable resources. Thus, CABED is the correct
sequence. Hence, the correct answer is option 2.
12. A. One of the hypothesis proposes that warming may be the result of variations in
solar activity.
B. The detailed causes of the recent warming remain an active field of research, but the
scientific consensus identifies elevated levels of greenhouse gases due to human activity
as the main influence.
C. The Earth's climate changes in response to external forces, including variations in its
orbit around the Sun (orbital forcing), volcanic eruptions, and atmospheric greenhouse
gas concentrations.
D. This attribution is clearest for the most recent 50 years, for which the most detailed
data are available.
E. Some other hypotheses departing from the consensus view have been suggested to
explain the observed increase in mean global temperature.
(1) BCDAE
(2) CBDEA
(3) BDAEC
(4) BAECD
(5) CDBAE
Detailed solution: The strongest link in this paragraph is that of BD. Statement B talks
about the human activity as the main reason for elevated levels of greenhouse gases and
statement D refers to this attribution (by humans) of emission of gases, being clear for
last 50 years. This eliminates options 1, 4 and 5.
Between options 2 and 3, the former is more appropriate as statement C is a better
introduction to the paragraph - this is because it states the fact that earth's climate changes
in response to certain factors whereas B talks about one such factor. Hence, the correct
answer is option 2.
13. A. So too it is impossible for there to be any propositions of ethics. Propositions can
express nothing that is higher.
B. The sense of the world must lie outside the world. In the world everything is as it is,
and everything happens as it does happen: in it no value exists - and if it did exist it
would have no value. If there is any value that does have value, it must lie outside the
whole sphere of what happens and is the case. For all that happens and is the case is
accidental. What makes it non-accidental cannot lie within the world, since if it did it
would itself be accidental. It must lie outside the world.
C. It is clear that ethics cannot be put into words. Ethics is transcendental.
D. All propositions are of equal value.
(A) DBAC
(B) BACD
(C) ACDB
(D) DCAB
(E) CABD
Solution: It is clear that statement D may be the first statement as compared to statement
C since statement C has a concluding essence to it by mentioning, “ethics cannot be put
into words. Ethics is transcendental.” This would indicate that the paragraph is on
“ethics” and statement C is effectively a summary of what is mentioned in the paragraph.
Statement B continues after statement D. The idea in the second statement does not match
up with any of the other three statements directly. However, the idea of ‘value’ is
continued from statement 4 to statement 2. Hence, that is a pair. Statements 2-1 are also a
pair since statement 1 begins with “So too...” continuing from the subject under
discussion in statement 2. We have already established statement 3 as the concluding
statement. Hence, the correct answer is option A.
14:A. The fact all contribute only to setting the problem, not to its solution.
B. How things are in the world is a matter of complete indifference for what is higher.
God does not reveal himself in the world.
C. To view the world sub specie aeterni is to view it as a whole- a limited whole. Feeling
the world as a limited whole- it is this that is mystical.
D. It is not how things are in the world that is mystical, but that it exists.
(A) ABCD
(B) BACD
(C) BADC
(D) CADB
(E) CDAB
Solution: An easy question if you managed to locate the mandatory pair. The talk about
‘what is mystical’ has been carried out in statements C and D. Statement D stresses on “it
is NOT how things are in the world that is mystical...” and statement C continues with “...
it is this that is mystical.” An answer to what is not but what is. Thus, statement C follows
statement D. This pair is there in only option C. The higher thing is indifferent to things
in the world in statement B– they contribute to setting the problem in statement 1– how
things are not mystical in statements D and C. The sequence makes sense and maintains a
logical flow. Hence, the correct answer is option C.
15. A. The operation is what has to be done to one proposition in order to make other out
of it.
B. Structure of proposition stands in internal relations to one another.
C. In order to give prominence to these internal relations we can adopt the following
mode of expression: we can represent a proposition as the result of an operation that
produces it out of other propositions (which are bases of the operation).
D. An operation is the expression of a relation between the structures of its result and of
its bases.
(A) ABCD
(B) BCDA
(C) DCAB
(D) BACD
(E) DABC
Solution: The keywords “these internal relations” in statement C refers to “internal
relations” mentioned in statement B. Therefore, C follows B. With that we can eliminate
options B and D. Statement 4 introduces the idea of „operations‟ (an operation), which is
followed up with further discussions on the same in statements C and A. Only one option
starts with statement D among options A, C and E, and that is option C.
16. A. Many prominent economists have criticised the existing global financial
institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund and their policies
regarding money supply, banks and debt in developing nations.
B. The debates have been linked to some extent with the valuation of non-traded goods
and social outcomes.
C. While ensuring the independence from government of the central bank or the creation
of a currency board are practical monetary reforms that many countries have
implemented to combat inflation or currency speculation, many suggest that more radical
monetary reform can assist in sweeping economic or social changes.
D. In recent years debates have focused on improving the use of currency.
E. Many people also criticize the fact that governments pay interest for the use of their
own money. This leaves the state of a nation's economy susceptible to the interests of
private bankers who control the issuance of money through fractional reserve banking.
1) ABCDE
2) DABEC
3) CBDAE
4) ADBEC
5) DBCAE
Solution: Statement D talks about the recent debates being focussed on improving the use
of currency. Statement B adds to it by saying that they been linked to the valuation of
non-traded goods and social outcomes. This forms the DB link eliminating options 1, 2
and 3. Statement A and E, both talk on criticism of economists as well as people. Both
these statements will come after statement C which talks about suggestion of a more
radical monetary reform. In any case, these three statements should be put together.
Between options 4 and 5 this condition is only met in option 5.
1) ECDBA
2) CBADE
3) EABCD
4) CEABD
5) DEBAC
Solution:
Of all the sentences, only statement C or statement E can be the introduction as these two
statements tell us how Maoism is different from earlier forms of Marxism or other
political idealogies. Also, statement D expounds on ‘the strategy’ of Maoism to make all-
round rural development a priority which is introduced in statement A. Hence AD is an
important link.
There is another distinct link between statements C and B. Statement B provides a model
for Mao's belief which is mentioned in statement C. Option 2, with C as introduction and
both CB and AD links present, is the best possible option.
18. A. The creation of the Black Tigers is based on the LTTE's studies of Asymmetric
warfare thus using suicide cadres to balance the government's greater resources.
B. The Black Tigers are believed to be the most effective unit of its kind in the world, as
with the rest of the LTTE, it is also secular, not driven by religious fanaticism.
C. The LTTE are keeping the Black Tiger unit active, as witnessed by their
commemoration ceremonies.
D. They will then be called up if needed, and if so will have a last meal with the LTTE
leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.
E. The Tiger unit get extensive training but are then believed to return to their previous
unit, without revealing their new assignment.
1) CEABD
2) BCDEA
3) EDACD
4) CBAED
5) BAEDC
Solution:
There is a strong ED link as E talks about the extensive training for an assignment and
statement D speaks about the members ‘then’ having a last meal. Hence we narrow our
options down to 4 and 5. In option 5, we see that statement C is the last sentence which is
not possible since statement C talks about LTTE keeping these units active which is
obvious from the remaining sentences of the paragraph, thus statement C should come in
the beginning, not the end.
19. A. In addition, there should be a windfall profits tax on oil and gas companies.
B. The world needs to rethink the sources of growth.
C. Capital gains should be taxed at least at as high a rate as ordinary income.
D. Why should those who make their income by gambling in Wall Street’s casinos be
taxed at a lower rate than those who earn their money in other ways?
E. If the foundations of economic growth lie in advances in science and technology, not
in speculation in real estate or financial markets, then tax systems must be realigned.
F. Such returns will, in any case, get a substantial benefit because the tax is not imposed
until the gain is realized.

(2) BEDCFA
(3) CDFAEB
(4) BDECFA
(5) EFADEB
Solution: It becomes slightly easy when one works with the options rather than trying to
create a chronological order oneself. From the given options, it is clear that the paragraph
ends with either statement A or B. Observing both the statements closely; one can easily
fix statement A as the concluding statement. The answer options are narrowed down to
options 2 and 4. The sequence provided in DCF is more compelling than any other
sequence provided. Hence, the correct answer is option 2.
20.A. Another problem is that fewer and fewer transnational agro - businesses now
dominate marketing, production, and inputs.
B. In addition, more securitization, online trading, and other financial market
developments have facilitated speculative investments in futures and options markets,
including those of food.
C. Moreover, with less government support, rural credit has become prohibitively
expensive.
D. Meanwhile, rich countries’ agricultural subsidies and tariffs have undoubtedly
undermined food production in developing countries.
E. Falling asset prices in other financial market segments may be more important for
explaining the surge in food prices than supply constraints.
F. This comes at the expense of small farmers and consumers, particularly the poor.
(1) ABCDEF
(2) AFCBED
(3) AFECBD
(4) FCBAED
(5) BEDAFC
Solution: A rather difficult one - whichever way you work, from the options backwards or
from the statements.
The first clear clue to look for is in the word ‘this’ in statement F. ‘This comes at the
expense of…” – what comes at the expense of? If you scan the sentences for the clue,
(looking for the sentence to precede F), you can see that only statement A can support F.
‘Another problem’ is that of making AF mandatory. Moving with the options AFC versus
AFE, statement C mentions ‘rural credit’ which is more related to ‘small farmers’ in
statement F than whatever is stated in statement E. The rest of the work is comparing
options 2 and 5. The answer becomes obvious. Hence, the correct answer is option 2.
21.A. We cannot afford to ignore the signs of the importance of the environment for our
health.
B. The research is hard to do, very little of it is now funded by the government and
private sector.
C. Moreover, confusion about environmental cancer risks also results from the
disinformation campaigns inspired by the tobacco industry.
D. The limited nature of evidence on some environmental cancer hazards should not be
confused with proof that no harm has occurred.
E. To address the scourge of cancer, we must complement efforts to detect and treat
cancer with new ways to keep people from developing the disease in the first place.
F. A way of looking is a way of not looking, runs a Chinese proverb.
(1) FDBCAE
(2) FDEACB
(3) ABCFED
(4) ADBCFE
Solution: A difficult paragraph to construct, but easier if you work with the options.
Statements F, A, and E look absolutely suitable for the beginning. Hence, all options are
in. However, working with FD versus AB versus AD versus ED, AB and AD get
eliminated in comparison to FD and ED.
Since DBCA is common in options 1 and 5, a casual comparison, with the sequence in
option 2 is enough to eliminate option 2. Once this stage is reached, it is not difficult to
plump for option 1, since statement F far outweighs statement E for the beginning.
Hence, the correct answer is option 1.
