RISK: Credit Rating Agencies


The Big Three credit rating agencies are Standard & Poor's (S&P), Moody's, and Fitch Group. In 2001, Moody's and Standard & Poor's market share was around 40% each, and Fitch's market share was around 15%. Standard & Poors has offices in 23 countries and provides credit ratings, indices, investment research and risk evaluations and solutions. In 2010 S&P issued 162,418 new and 556,872 revised ratings. www.standardandpoors.com Moody's Investors Service is a leading provider of credit ratings, research, and risk analysis. The firm's ratings and analysis track debt covering more than 110 countries, 12,000 corporate issuers, 25,000 public finance issuers, and 106,000 structured finance obligations. www.moodys.com

The assignment may be done individually or in groups of two. What to do 1. List down the influence of rating on the creditworthiness of issuers (country or /and company) 2. Each group, select one credit rating agency and: a) List down the importance and role of the credit rating agency selected b) Rating process c) The relevance of their rating d) List down at least 2 recent instances when the rating was criticized and on what grounds and why?

Submit the report on or before 26 September, 2012 Presentation on 3 October, 2012 (10 mts presentation by each group) Weight age 10% (Report 8% and Presentation 2%)
