Writing Around Your Discourse

ENC1101: Fall 2012 Benjamin

1. Tasks
1. Interview a senior undergraduate/advisor in the major you would like to major in OR interview a professional in the field you think you would like to work in. 2. Critically analyze the academic discourse community you would like to belong to by drafting a report in a genre that your academic discourse community does not support. 3. Identify the acceptable genres of discourse in the academic discourse community you belong to. 4. Analyze why these are the acceptable genres. Who do these genres benefit? What type of language is used? How do the moves in your discourse encourage or inhibit participation? 5. Include an artist statement on why you chose to write in the genre you did, and why this genre is unsupported by your academic community. You may also present an argument of why this particular genre should be included in your discourse community.

Demonstrate you have a working knowledge of writing as socially dependent upon the discourse community it serves. To question the authority of a particular discourse by exploring alternative forms of communication. To recognize that communication and communication practices are not fixed but can change over time. Demonstrate you recognize the appropriate discourse practices of the particular academic/professional discourse you wish to join. Word length minimum, 1,000 words MLA format Written in a publication format that does not fit into acceptable writing genres as practiced by your desired academic discourse (can be PowerPoint, Prezi, Wix.com, Blog, Google Site, etc.) Demonstrates appropriate document design (title page, headers, etc) Includes a one page artist statement discussing why you chose to write in that particular genre Presents a thorough discussion of acceptable forms of communication in a desired academic discipline Discusses why those genres are acceptable and critically critiques those genres (who do they serve and why must provide sufficient proof and support) Discusses ways in which you can shape the discourse community Demonstrates appropriate knowledge of discourse communities and genres
