Objective: I Can Understand concepts about print Follow Instructions Compare/contrast Fill in Venn Diagram State Standards Addressed: Kindergarten: I Can Use letters and phonetically spelled words to write about experiences, stories, people, objects, or events. Write by moving from left to right and from top to bottom using proper spacing. Recite short poems, rhymes, and songs (K. l) First Grade: I Can Use knowledge of the basic rules of punctuation and capitalization when writing. (1.l) Capitalize the first word of a sentence, names of people, and the pronoun I. (1.l) Write brief descriptions of a real object, person, place, or event, using sensory details. Use descriptive words when writing. Second Grade: I Can Create readable documents with legible handwriting. Capitalize: proper nouns, words at the beginning of sentences, greetings, months and days of the week, titles, and initials of people correctly

Summary: Students will be seated on the ABC carpet and listen/participate attentively while the teacher reviews the parts of a book, (i.e. front cover, back cover, spine, and title page). The teacher will then read the book, The Gingerbread Man. The teacher will pause during the story and ask for predictions from the students (i.e. What do you think will happen next?). The teacher will then review the book orally with the students to promote comprehension. The teacher will instruct the entire class, completing the Venn Diagram Comparing real cookies, pretend cookies, and what both have in common. The teacher will then direct the students attention to the students own Venn Diagram writing activity and explain the directions. Learning Activities 1. Book Walk/review/predictions 2. Venn Diagram Differentiation: Students who cannot yet write words on their own will receive direct instruction from the teacher (The entire class will write the words together one letter at a time).
